On 27 October 2011, an epic rescue mission was conducted near Igloolic, Nunavut to save two Inuit walrus hunters that got caught in a storm out at sea.  The story is covered in a podcast called “Rescue” produced by Sony Music Entertainment and hosted by Donny Dust.  The episode is called “Leave No One Behind” published on 27 November 2023 and I would encourage you to listen to it now before continuing.

Years prior in 2003, I would meet Janick Gilbert in Jarvis Lake, Alberta on the Search and Rescue Technician selection.  It is a grueling 17 days of proving your worth and competing for a spot on the year long course to become a SAR Tech.  Janick, who was born and raised in Quebec, didn’t speak a word of English.  But at the end of the 17 days, both he and I would be 2 of the 13 chosen from the 30+ candidates.  When we met again in Comox at the start of the SAR Tech course, Janick had learned to speak English…and it turned out, he was a card!
